| Interserve is fully committed to conducting its operations in an environmentally sustainable manner in order to protect the environment for future generations. Through its operating companies, the Group seeks to ensure: - Compliance with relevant environmental legislation and regulation
- Prevention of pollution
- The efficient use of natural resources
- The minimisation of waste and emissions to air and water
- Environmental awareness among all employees

- Continual improvement in environmental performance
In the retail sector these objectives are achieved by building long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with our clients in the support of the creation and management of assets throughout their lives. | |
Cutting CO2 emissions We advise clients on ways of identifying areas for improved energy efficiency with a view to minimising the carbon footprint, as well as reducing energy costs. For example, we are supporting PRUPIM in its commitment to reduce carbon emissions through efficiencies in transport, energy and waste management. At The Mall in Cribbs Causeway, for instance, we have reduced CO2 emissions by around 300 tonnes per year through a range of energy efficiency initiatives.
Waste management
Interserve works closely with clients to minimise the environmental impact of their waste. This includes development of waste segregation and streaming policies tailored for each site, to maximise recycling and re-use and minimise the volumes of waste sent to landfill. To that end, Interserve has formed strategic alliances with accredited waste contractors to ensure full compliance with best practice and environmental legislation.
For example, we have developed innovative waste management schemes with Sainsbury’s, contributing to the company winning the Clean City Platinum Award and being included in the Corporation of London’s top 20 businesses for waste management.
Minimising resource usage
We also work with clients to minimise their environmental impact by reducing the consumption of resources and by ensuring that materials are procured from sustainable sources wherever possible.
At Sainsbury’s, for instance, the introduction of a sustainable dry foam cleaning system has reduced water consumption by 50%, equating to 8 million litres of water per year.
During a full manufacture, installation and fit-out project for 24 John Lewis stores nationwide, totalling an area of 1,200,000 ft2, we used sustainable maple timbers throughout.
Practising what we preach
All of the sustainability principles applied to clients’ buildings are also applied to our own buildings and construction sites to minimise our environmental impact.
