Sustainability

Interserve is dedicated to providing a sustainable business for our customers, employees, communities and shareholders. We have developed RENEWABLES as a framework for identifying and managing 10 sustainability areas that address the social, economic and environmental aspects of our activities. This helps us to discharge our responsibilities, improve on our performance and bring added value to our clients and the community.

Sustainability touches every aspect of the design, construction, operation and maintenance processes and is based upon the principle of reducing the impact on our surroundings by minimising carbon emissions; operating efficiently; and eliminating waste. Making the best use of natural light and ventilation; efficient insulation and heating systems; use of timber claddings in lieu of hard surfaces; we save energy. We endeavour to design buildings that maximise the space provided with minimum use of the virgin site and to reuse excavated materials to remodel the site without impacting on our surroundings, flora and fauna. It is also our objective that our buildings do not cost more than traditionally-built structures over their lifetime, and clearly demonstrate better life cycle costs and value in both capital and operating terms. Above all, we regularly liaise with communities through the Considerate Constructors scheme.

Sustainability Management Plan (SMP)
The plan forms part of our sustainability quality control process in compliance with ISO 14001, and defines the design and the key benchmarks for a sustainable project delivery. It also identifies the contract team’s roles and responsibilities and is used to monitor actions during regular meetings with the project stakeholders.

Sustainability in Practice

  • Our recycling performance has increased by 63% in two years and our life cycle investment programme is delivering measurable reductions in energy and water consumption across London Borough of Croydon
  • On our South East Regional Prime Contract (PriDE – an Interserve joint venture with SEC) we engaged with local councils and voluntary agencies to provide work in the local community during the refurbishment of a local welfare centre at Cavalry Barracks.
  • Using tools such as BREEAM shape and control the process of arriving at a sustainable building (i.e. Leeds BSF project). A number of our projects meet the BREEAM target of replacing a minimum of 25% of significant aggregates used with recycled materials (i.e. Swansea)
  • The state-of-the-art installation at Hadley Learning Community includes an automated ventilation system; under-floor heating; a woodchip boiler; a night cooling system; photovoltaic panels and natural sedum roofs to control the drainage process and recycle water on site
  • Prudent phasing, restricted working times and noise surveys resulted in reduced noise, nuisance and dust at Cwmbran, while for our Cyprium work we received Considerate Constructors Bronze award
  • Reduced the import of raw material and used materials with recycled content in our development at Liberty Stadium.
  • Achieved BREEAM Excellent (Industrial Unit) for our Use of “Rainwater for Recycling”
