Interserve Unveils Eco-gym at University College London Hospital
3 November 2009
As part of UCLH’s Carbon Awareness day on November 5th – Interserve will be providing a Carbon Gym for Trust staff, visitors and patients to try out! The aim of the gym is to help people make the connection between their daily lifestyles and climate change.
As CO2 is a gas at room temperatures and cannot be seen, it is difficult to fully comprehend how much CO2 we emit and therefore how to reduce our emissions. Commissioned for Global Action Plan, the Carbon Gym is a unique tool where participants can see and feel the effects of CO2 by rowing to try and inflate three columns of air, which represent the amount of CO2 emitted when travelling by train, car and plane. The associated weight of this CO2 can be felt with the accompanying dumbbells. It provides an all round environmental workout for the brain and body!
Interserve is continuing to support the Trust in their target to reduce carbon emissions by 10% by 2010 and we are helping the Facilities team to develop a sustainability action plan that will help drive this commitment through:
- Energy and carbon management
- Procurement
- Travel and transport
- Water usage
- Waste management
- Pollution
- Land use and ecology
- Local community
- Staff development and training
